Global Carbon Emissions Reach New Highs Despite Environmental Efforts
In 2023, global carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from fossil fuels surged to a record-breaking 37.4 billion tonnes, marking a 1.1% increase from the previous year. This uptick occurred despite significant advancements in renewable energy adoption and international climate commitments. The primary contributor to this rise was the increased reliance on coal, which accounted for over 65% of the emission growth. Additionally, a shortfall in hydropower generation due to persistent droughts led to an additional 170 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, as countries turned to fossil fuels to meet energy demands. Challenges in Emission Reduction
Despite a 13% growth in renewable energy generation, fossil fuels still constituted 81.5% of global primary energy use in 2023. This continued dependence, particularly in developing nations like India, underscores the challenges in transitioning to cleaner energy sources
